I've decided to take up the trumpet, and i'm getting a trumpet from a friend tomorrow to begin practicing on. I started a ska band not long ago, and i was the lead singer, but i decided to take up the trumpet because we decided we needed a second guitarist and so our bassist took up that possision and our trumpet player took up the bass and i said hey i'll try to learn trumpet and play, and so our trombonist is going to sing now and we got a new trombonist. Any tips or anything that anyone can provide or anything for a dedicated new trumpet player?

Lots and lots of practice! Trumpet is tough in the way that it takes time to build up muscles and strength in your lips, jaw, tongue, etc. While some instruments, like guitar or bass, for example, you could possibly get fairly efficient at in a short amount of time, brass is much different. Definetly get some lessons if you are serious about it. Lessons are almost mandatory, in my opinion, and are needed if you want to get any good (this is assuming of course that you don't play any brass instruments or know music well). Anyways man, hope everything pans out for you. Good luck!

Yeah i'm pretty new to it, and i think i'm joining a music class in school to be instructed on it. But i have messed around on a trombone before. I could get some high notes on the trombone.

Well, Reid you are quite knowledgable, However, I believe that Armstrong never had a lesson, i feel it is a matter of "selling ur soul" . . . that is, how bad do u wanna be a musicman, how much do u wanna manipulate some brass tubing to create mathematicly symetric meter, and expressive tones. B)

True. But it was also...Louis Armstrong. Haha. I suppose you could without lessons, but its probably not a good idea. However, if you do decide to teach yourself, good luck! Buy yourself some trumpet lesson books or something.
