So I've posted numerous questions relating to my struggling band. here's the latest: My friend, who is the other trombone, doesn't think that a ska band can get anywhere with only 2 trombones for the horn section, because trumpet/sax are the "dominant" horns in the "good" ska bands. I told him that's not true and there are plenty o bands with mostly/only trombones for the horn section. Cept I was blanking on examples.... You guys know of any? Thanks

Right on, brother man! Trumpets? Nah, they're for dorks But seriously...yeah, I've got a feeling that I've seen some around too, but nothing springs to mind. Listen to some bands like The Planet Smashers (trombone and tenor sax) and RX Bandits (same) like, they have really mellow horn sections but that doesn't stop them from being fully sick! Oh and Voodoo Glow Skulls, yeah they could start a riot with their horn section. And you can always have a trumpet or sax player join the band later. Hope it works out, -Faulk Edit: Wait no, screwed that up. Voodoo Glow Skulls use trumpets. Less Than Jake though, pretty sure they don't use trumpets. |

| this one band opened at a show i was playing...they only had two trombones...personally i didnt like the band..but the two bones were amazing. they did some great stuff for a young band...but...they also were a little too punk for my likes. nice sound though. funny, the band i play with..the head guy says he wont work with saxes again. so, it's only brass...i think there could be so much more. like...a tenor (supertones and FIF status!) | ||

The trombone player in the Johnstones name is Julian, so I'm guessing he is julianface, and I don't know whether this means the trumpet player has left, or whether he's just being a jerk, or funny, or whatever, but he should know better than anyone here, so why don't we let him fill us in on that. I hear he plays keys with his foot while playing trombone too (or, I saw him do it once at the Dungeon...skafest, I dunno, 4 year ago?). On a note related more to the original post, I'm a sax player myself, and definitely don't think sax or trumpet is needed to have a good band, you can do it with two trombones no problem. If any of you have heard of the Arsenals, they just have one trombone, nothing else hornwise, and they might have been the best band I've seen in concert to date. I think if you can do it, all bands should get more horns, at least to have options, and there's nothing like a chaotic mix of upbeat guitar, walking bass, quick drums, and copious horns to stick in the middle of a song. There is no reason anyone NEEDS a trumpet or sax in their band though. I think it would be cool if one of you decided to really up your range and played the role of trumpet, it would be hard, but give you an awesome edge in your sound. The trombone is very underappreciated. |

| now im gonna try not to piss anyone off, but im in an interesting position here. i play trumpet and love it. but in my opinion, the dominant ska instrument is a trombone. dont tell anyone i said that. the truth is, the trombone is such a powerful instrument, it overpowers the others. but i think a trumpet is more versatile for ska parts, and trumpet solos are usually better. just play what u like. anyway, u def. do not need sax or trumpet, especially if theres 2 bones. | ||

Skankin' Pickle - two trombones (one slide, one valve) and mike park on tenor sax/vocals MU330 - two trombones The Urge - two trombones and a tenor sax who also plays keys It doesn't matter which horns you have, as long as you have two of them you're good. two trombones can work. use what you got. |
