Hi there everyone, Over recent times I've got completely hooked on Ska, to the point where I can't listen to much else because its kind of dull in comparison. So, I'd really like to take up playing trumpet. I already play drums, piano and guitar, but I know trumpet will be totally different and so that won't really be much of a help - will it? So, what advice would you give to someone like me wanting to get started? A few questions I have are: 1 - How much would I expect to pay for a decent trumpet? 2 - Would I be able to get by with just a few private lessons to learn the basics and get started? 3 - What do I need to know about looking after and maintaining a trumpet? Thanks a lot everyone! |

| well, for a good trumpet, i was lucky and found a good one used and i bouth it for around $400. they arent the cheapest things in the world for a good one, u can probly find a decent one for like 100-200 mabe. matters wat u mena by a few, since u know like rythems and stuff all u need is notes and stuff, but to become decent i advice mroe then just a few though there are a few players that can learn by themselves. Everythnig u need 2 know about maintainance is in articles on this website. keep it clean and rust free | ||

| i think it would be better for you to get prvate lessons for maybe a year or more. So you can learn different styles of playing the trumpet like jazz, funk, etc and after you learn that you can apply some of the differents styles of music you learned on improvisations, and if you plan to write youre own music you can apply some of the things you learn in there too. please reply i want to know if i helped or just made the problem bigger | ||

| Nah, you've definately helped, thanks very much. I'm starting college next year, so getting lessons long term wouldn't be too hard, I can probably get them really cheap 'cos I'm taking A level music. I just need to find myself a trumpet now! Once I'm going I'll be stopping back here for sure. | ||

| if you plan on playing it for a long time and d getting good i'd go with a strad or a yamaha 8 series or 6 series (if you c an get a hold of 1) not terribly expencive to get 1 used i bought a yamaha 6335HG for 800$ in perfect condition a while ago and I love it. but im sure on like ebay or something you could get a student model for less than 200$ | ||
