Has anyone ever thought of actually just going one step further and writing out the songs in sheet music, that way any good horn player could just read and go. It would make it a little easier to come in on time in more complicated songs, it would allow you to play songs you're not as familiar with, which would allow people to learn a lot more songs a lot faster.

What are your thoughts on this? Am I the only one that thinks this is a tangible idea? I don't really have a problem with tabs, I just think that it would be simpler and more efficient.

I have tried to write out sheet music for these songs...

and it is NOT easy

especially if you are writing so that it actually lines up with the other parts

but if anyone can do it, kudos to you!

Well at least I know what the site is called now. Anyway, Don, although you may not be able to write your own sheet music (and I'm sure you could with just a bit of practice), if there were sheet music available would anyone use it? Or would you much rather it be kept to tabs. I'm sure the site will not explode if we have some sheet music on it (we already have the option of seeing real notes instead of +a1), so I don't think I'm overstepping my bounds, I'm not trying to revolutionize the site, I'm just looking for a few people that are thinking "Hey, sheet music, that might be easier to read for the song I'm working on." So if there's anyone that would like to try some sheet music, let me know, and if there's anyone that thinks I'm absolutely out of place, let me know too.

Yeah I would definately use it. Although that only leaves more room for error, don't you think. I've tried to play songs with people on different instruments using different tabs (of the same song) and there's variation in the tabs, and that's only notes! Adding rhythms puts in a whole other level of complexity that may not be suitable for a website usable by anyone on the web...

I don't know, but hey, give it a shot!

It's a good idea, but most of the music on this site is ska/jazz, and a lot of that is really syncopated, and when you try to put it into sheet music, its REALLY hard. I've tried to write some of my bands stuff in finale, and for it to be 100% correct, there ends up being like double dotted sixteenth notes and stuff like that. I think it would work, but you would need to know the syncopation of the song in order to do it.

hi

if u can do it, then please do it. i've got a friend who did some for me, but he's off to a music conservatoire this sep, and i doubt he'd do any more for me.

you could always email the band directly aswell, they may help. Los Albertos are great for that. If they want a ska-revival, then letting people play their songs certainly helps them in the long run. But that's a different matter.

So, if anyone can do that, that'd be fantastic.

Ya, any song you want done in sheet music, as well as tabs, I'd be happy to put together for you. Of course, when I have time (I work approximately 15 hours a day) so if you need something for the next day, I could do it, but only if I come on the site and see your post. It would be great if I had maybe a week to do each song in sheet music. For tabs the same, but I could run a tab of for any non-streetlight song in about 10min, so if I get in at midnight, I'll just do it for you. Sheet music takes a little more time if you need it right away. I probably put about 3 hours works into Everything Went Numb, but that has 5 horn parts, crazy harmonies, and countermelodies. Some RBF songs will like The Fire would take me about an hour and a half, an others like Sell Out would take just 1 hour. Most catch 22 songs (and most other bands) will take maybe 15-30min, and some really easy stuff even less. Honestly, some ska songs are ridiculously easy. Mr. Smiley took 5min to learn and write out. Anyway, that's just to give you an idea of the turnaround time if you want sheet music from me, others may be faster, others may be slower, if it's really urgent email me savager_11@hotmail.com and if not then post up here like you would normally ask for tabs, and I'll see what I can do (I'm sure there are others that can do sheet music too, looks like Hi-iH offered to do some).

Don, it's true, there are lots of variations, but the truth of it is, only one of them is right. When you have variations on a song, it's because one of them is wrong (unless the band recorded two different versions for some reason :S, or maybe when SM covered the Catch 22 songs and added parts). Anyway, it's the same with the rhythms. It is creating more room for error, but that's because it's providing one more service. If the sheet music is done right, then it's awesome, if it isn't, then it sucks, just like tabs. I've seen lots of tabs (even on this site) that are just wrong in every way, there are no variations, the horn can only play one note at a time, if there are two conflicting tabs, one's just wrong (or both are). All it comes down to is how much you trust your source.

Hi-iH I know exactly what you're saying, and maybe for some songs it's true, but I guarantee you that 90% of the songs out there do actually lie on a pretty tangible beat (actually most ska horn lines lie just on the offbeat 8th notes, not even on the 16th notes. If you are getting double dotted 16th notes, then it probably just means that you should double the speed of the song, and make them double dotted eighth notes which are a lot easier to read, also, if it's that offbeat, it can normally be substituted for a triplet, or just write it out the complicated way and the person reading the music can count the rhythm out, it's all there.

Sorry for the long post, but this is the last paragraph. If anyone wants sheet music, I work out of a program called Finale, so it would be easiest if you could find that program, and I can send you the very small Finale files, as opposed to send you pictures of sheet music. The pictures work, but they're messier, take longer, and if you have Finale you can play the music back to yourself. I use Finale 2006, so anyone that does have Finale will need to upgrade to 2006 or 2007 to read my files. If anyone is interested in getting Finale you can buy it at your local Long & McQuade for about $600, or talk to me and I'll set you up.
