I've heard a few people talking about using Finale, I myself am a huge Finale user. I'm just curious as to how many people have a version of Finale, which version (and year), and how often they actually use it. Also, I'd like to know what other programs people use, like Cakewalk or Cuebass. I have the a full version of Finale 2006, and I have a 2007 Printmusic demo (just so I can read files from my friends that have 2007).

I have finale notepad (freeware) and I used it for about a week after I got it. Its not bad. I'd rather have one of the higher end versions so I can plug a midi into it and get exact scores of what I wanna play.

I've never heard of Finale actually, but I personally use Adobe Audition and haven't ever found anything better. I use it for all of my music and sound wave processing, editing, and splicing. I'll also be using it to record my band's music. It's a great program with tons of capabilities.

Audition doesn't use physical notation, but I was adding it because the post also mention software such as Cakewalk to which I've heard described as a low-end Audition.

On another note (pardon the musical pun), but to Savage, I really enjoyed the article you submitted on the various scales. It's been quite a while since we've had another well-written and expansive article on this site! Kudos.

Cheef, I'm right there with you, it would be great to just play something and have it written out already, but I don't own a midi keyboard, and the mic notation I think needs much higher quality microphone than I own. Finale is good for lots of other stuff though, you can put in anything you hear, it's also a great tool for writing songs. If you're interested in a full version I may be able to help you out.

Ryan, first off, thanks, I wasn't sure anyone would care or make it through the whole article, but as long as someone got something from it, that's great, much appreciated. Secondly, if you've never tried finale before, I suggest you try at least a demo, you can download one from the site http://www.finalemusic.com/downloads/demos.aspx it's not a mixing program, but seeing music written out can really put it into perspective and make it easier to play, especially ska. I may actually look into getting Audition for myself now on a side note (pardon this one too).

Thanks for the link, I'll look into getting it. I could use something to help me in transposing...

If you do end up getting a demo let me know, I might be able to upgrade you to the full version if you like it, and I can show you an easy way to transpose using Finale.

You can upgrade the demo to full?

Yup, you just have to register. It will probably ask you every time you open the demo, if not, go to help, register finale... A screen should pop up, you can register by internet mail or phone. It costs something like $500-$600. If you want to skip a very expensive step, go to register by phone and send the code it gives you to me. I would suggest getting Finale 2006, but if you have the 2005 or 2004 demo I can do that too. 2007 might be a little out of my reach, but I can try it.

Savage, I got the Finale Notepad 2007, which is the demo. How can I upgrade to the full version?

I can always get the 2006 demo if needed.

Sorry for the delay, this thread had slipped away from me somehow. Anyway, I don't know if notepad will work, I normally use the full versions, but I see that they've gotten rid of the 2006 and 2007 ones. What you want to do is go to register finale... (it will prompt you, or if it doesn't, it should be under the help menu), there are 3 ways to register, go to register by phone, and get the User Code, send that to me, I'll see if I can use it, if not, send me your email and I'll send you the full 2006 demo, and do the same thing with the code, I know I can do that one.
