| Anyone have any tips for improvisation? I hear some really badass improv trumpet solos and have no idea how to do anything like that! Any ideas? | ||

My #1 tip would be learn your scales. Blues Scales can make some sick solos. Second if playing along with a song just modify the melody. Throw some Eighth notes here and there. Third. Vibratos, accent, (de)crescendos and staccatos can make your solos sound just that much better. Lastly play what you feel. Dont try to make something that will be way to hard for you. Even easy solos can bring the crowd to thier feet. |

| Probably the number one key is to think of an idea. Improvisation doesn't mean just pick up the horn and blow. Practice around on blues scales, and it helps to know how to make at least all major and minor chords (at your very least!), so that you can read and understand them on sheet music and build off of them. Definitely get a feel for the melody also, and never think that just by constantly playing a bunch of notes high and fast makes a good solo- rests are just silent notes. | ||

make sure you tell a story. in a conversation you wouldn't yell the whole time or whisper the whole time, likewise you wouldn't talk about dogs then move on the hot air balloons without finishing. So, while soloing make sure you make good use of dynamics and try to finish up and lead into the next idea instead of just changing. of course theres the obvious fact that you need to know what key the song is in and what notes you can use but after you get by that part try some of these ideas. |
