Okay so our band is going to do our first performance at the end of the month. It's nothing big, it's just an annual art event at school, with just locals attending to casually listen to music and go to craft stations and what have you. We got our stuff down and we've all been in performances and such before.
What I'm looking for are suggestions on setting up as far as microphones and such go to get a good balance in sound (What should and shouldn't be mic'd, audio levels etc etc.). We're playing in our school cafeteria, a pretty large open cafe, if that matters. Thanks for the time!

I think, emphasis on think because my only prior experience is reading set ups in guitar magazines, and performing as an actress in shows, I think it depends on a few certain factors-such as
will their be lots of excess static? (people talking, others band playing at the same time, etc)
what instruments you're playing, and if all eyes are supposed to be on you at all times
But, if their are just some stray threads, no actually masses, then the brassline doesnt need to be miced unless you're not very good with air support. thats all i know, sorry, hope any of this helped

Well it's in our large, open cafeteria. The band is at the far wall of the cafeteria with tables and such for those who want to listen. Also, more towards the entrance, are all of the arts and crafts. So, there is a mixture of static noise and those who want to listen.
As for instruments, electric bass and guitar, drums, 2 trumpets, a trombone and a saxophone.

Thanks for your input, kerry

probably in order: 1 trumpet, alto, trombone, other trumpet.
The general consensus we've come to is to mic the sax, the trombone, and put both trumpets on one mic, while also micing certing parts of the drum set, and of course the vocals.
