Given a choice if you could erase any band/artist/song from history so that you didnt have to suffer it or them any longer what would you go for ?

For artist it would be Amy Winehouse hands down. Every track she has ever done is like pollution to my eardrums and makes me want to kill someone !

For song, I'd have to pick that damn Umbrella crap by Rhianna - 11 weeks at number one - cant stand it !!

I know this is a little overzealous, but every rap "artist" that has ever been known to popular music (some underground guys are bearable, or at least have some real music behind them). Any song that uses "-a" instead of "-er" is gone too (although most of them would go out with the rappers). Umbrella is a perfect example of horrible lyrics and singing. "Otha" is not a word, "foreva" is not a word either, and it can't be a speech problem either because there's no such thing as an "umbreller". If you're going to sing in English, speak English while you're singing.

I could disagree. If you erased every song containing a mispronounced word from the universe, I estimate that we'd only be left with a quarter of what we have now. Because of the speed of music and the flow of the melody, lots of words don't come out the same as when they're spoken, if you really want to be pedantic about their spelling. And 'er's and 'a's can get pretty hard to distinguish.

As for the question, I'd like to take a band called Operater Please and place them on one of the gas giants, perhaps Saturn. Their music is boring and the band itself is a waste of space and more importantly, instruments. They're obviously only popular because some record company had a chance encounter with them and stuck them on the radio, when there are thousands of other better bands that have less talent than a Vegemite sandwich.

I would say ....any song that has no real music.....for example rap, reggetton, etc. If your going to play music....play actual music dont just play one note and let that be the melody for the whole song.....sing something that actually makes sense...

I know what you mean Faulk. Poetic license definitely has its place, and it's used in countless songs in all genres, but when your whole rhyming scheme is based on the fact that "other" rhymes with "umbrella"...you might want to take a look at your third grade notes again. Yes, we'll say that would be about a quarter of all songs gone, which leaves us with about the fraction of songs that actually deserve to be played. Who knows, that might even make the music industry a respectable establishment again. I agree with trumpetgeek69 too.

Rap and reggaeton are music. And music is an art, and those creating it can use whatever words they want. Dr. Suess made up words, so what doesn't let them fudge them? Picasso was a terrible painter; I guess he should go back to third grade art class as well. I wouldn't erase anything, because it's all important.

Yes, everything had a part in the world we have today, and without even the most insignificant thing, the world could be a very different place, but that's not what this thread is about, it's about what music we would rather not listen to anymore.

You make some good points, yes, music is an art, and artists can take liberties. Dr. Suess did make up words, but Dr. Suess never asked anyone to take his works seriously. They were children's books meant to entertain the imagination of young children and teach them to think outside the box. I hardly think Rhianna can claim that. Painting is about brush control, imagination and insight (among many other things), and I think seeing a blind man paint something that even resembled a human face is just as amazing in that respect as seeing any man that can see paint the most perfect portrait. You don't learn how to paint without looking in third grade, but you do learn how to pronounce simple English words. If Rhianna (or anyone else for that matter) had some sort of speech problem that did not allow her to pronounce "r"s, then I'm sure no one would let that get in the way of appreciating the music she has created. On the other hand, what music have any of those people created? How many people in popular music today actually write their own music? Many of the bands, yes, a few singer/songwriters, ok, but how many "musicians" can actually say the song they sing in front of millions was note for note written by them. If they didn't write the music, they are not responsible for the music, they are responsible for their lyrics, which makes them a poet, not a musician. When you look at their lyrics and think of them as a poem, it doesn't really compare with the great poets either, so at best, rap and reggaeton performers are low class poets, and that's IF they write their own lyrics (which I know a lot of them do, rappers especially, so fair enough, but they hardly deserve the hype that's all around their name).

I agree Savage. Yeah that really shits me when people don't write their own music and especially when they don't even write their own lyrics. That's just retarded, it's like praising Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet and ignoring the man.

Heh, umbrella doesn't rhyme with other...that's silly. I like Aaron Barret's thoughts on rhyme in My Life by the Forces of Evil:
"All you motherf*ckers well you don't know SHIT
I've got a mind and I am not afraid to use it
I know you shouldn't rhyme shit with SHIT but
This is my song I'm gonna sing it how I wanna sing it"

I also don't like the misuse of grammar for lyrical gain. Like I think Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello sometimes uses the fact that he's an immigrant as an excuse to use English grammar incorrectly (when it suits him). But Gogol Bordello are friggin awesome, so I'll let him get away with it
