Are you talking about the variety of cheap plastic/cardboard casings that come with the reeds? I have double reed holders (holds 2 sax reeds, not one bassoon reed ), somewhat like this one http://www.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/LAVOZREED.JPG, so I buy my reeds and transfer them right away. When I used to use the original packages, I would always keep them as long as I could (I still do actually, after I transfer them). Call it being a pack rat, but you never know when they might come in handy, I normally use them to give other people reeds that didn't come with their own case. I know you can cut reeds down and get rid of small cracks, and I've definitely done that many times, but beware, although it lasts longer, it can really change the sound of the reed, so (unless you're up for an experiment) I wouldn't try it too much. Finding a use for reeds that are beyond their playing days sounds like a good thing to think about though. I bet at least one person has another use for them.
