Alright, so I was thinking about how many different people there are on this site, and how many different places we are all from. This got me to thinking that if we were all in one place, we could have some awesome things happening. Then I thought, "Hey, why do we have to be in the same place? It is the age of information isn't it?" So my main idea is to get a few people who are interested to try to write a song without even having met each other. It would be kind of funny (but also kind of horrible) to actually become a band and have solely recorded material spliced together from different places in the world (although I don't expect this to happen, I just want to see if we can pull off writing a song). We can share ideas through email, and if you have any recording equipment whatsoever you can record some ideas you have for melodies, chord progressions, lyrics, or anything else and send them around as an mp3 file (or some much better file that I'm sure someone will bring to my attention). Everything is basically up in the air, I just want to see if anyone would seriously be interested in trying to write (for the first time ever? ) a song from across the world (or however far you are from everyone else). Any feedback is welcomed. If it seems like people are interested I'll post a rough list of a few things to think about.

Just thinking,
Savage

Yes very interested, sounds like a interesting idea. Someone would have to be emailed all the clips of the songs and then put them altogether. Or something...

Heh, Less Than Jack sounds like a good name for a cover band. Unless of course you were actually talking about a forum for a cover band...

Good idea Savage! Count me in. I don't think it would be the first time something like this has been done though. I heard that The Sound of Animals Fighting created a whole album like that. Pretty cool eh. And has anyone heard of a virtual band? I vaguely remember my trumpet teacher telling me about a site or something where people play into microphones with webcams and whatnot...but looking back on that...would it work? "bonerkid23, you're lagging and it's screwing us all up".

But yeah, great idea. I'm not sure if he still uses this site, but I'm pretty sure idon'tknow would be an authority for this kind of thing, maybe could help with the mixing and structure. He shouldn't be hard to contact if his Slinky Stu myspace is still operating.

Perhaps a classic cover song would be good to start with, just to make sure there aren't any major flaws in the plan.

Great! I'm not surprised it has been done before, but it still seems like a fun idea. My original idea was actually to try to write and ORIGINAL song, and just to use playing clips as a way of transferring ideas (and maybe record the song once it was written), but since everyone mistook me (my fault, but also shows that people are geared more towards covering), and it would be much easier and probably more likely to happen, I like the cover idea.

So, not to try to boss everyone around (because that's not cool), but just to try to give this some structure first off, why don't we wait, maybe a week or two to give people a chance to find this thread, and then go with what we have?

A few things to consider:
Members: 1)How many?
2)What instruments?
3)Horntabs.net only?
Song: 4)Easy vs. Challenging?
5)Genre?
6)Suggestions?
Equipment: 7)Microphones
8)Mixing program (at least one person)
9)Exchange emails
10)Access to instruments
11)Correct tabs
Other: 12)Timeline

Anything else, feel free to post. I've put numbers on the subjects so if you have something to say regarding microphones, you can put a 7) before your comment and everyone will know what you're talking about.

Since, I'm here, I'll start off considering a few things:

1)It would be easier with fewer people, but if we get a HUGE turnout, I would want to try it. It depends on how many people want to do it, and instrument mix I guess.

2)I guess it really depends on how accurately we want to emulate the original.

3&10)I see no harm in getting people we know from our hometowns if we need them, but if we have what we need, maybe we should stick to site members. I have a very good guitar player, trumpet, and even clarinet that might be interested if we need them, but I won't mention anything unless we do. I myself am a sax player and have access to an alto, a tenor, a trombone, and a really shitty trumpet.

4,5&6)I would love to do something complex like some new streetlight stuff, but realistically, maybe we should stick to something a little more simple for starters. I'm sure some good suggestions will be made, so we'll wait on those.

7)I have a webcam mic, and MAYBE could get access to a much higher quality one.

8)I don't really have anything myself. I know a few of my friends have some good programs, but I would probably have trouble gaining access to them (as they are away at University most of the time).

9)My email is savager_11@hotmail.com feel free to add me to MSN if that's what you use, but make sure you email me first telling me you're from horntabs.net. It occurs to me that we may all have to agree on one instant messaging program (or just exclusively use email). I vote MSN, but we'll see what the majority says.

11)I have no problem tabbing out whatever horn parts we may need. I'm a lot weaker when it comes to guitar, bass, and especially drums, but I'm capable, it will just take longer. Anyone else that thinks they have anything to offer is more than welcome to jump in.

12)Maybe 2 weeks planning, 2 weeks recording and getting clips in to the mixer, and (depending on how many people) 2-4 weeks mixing (sorry if my mixing times are off, I really don't know much about it).

I can play trombone well(ish) so i can do that, my brother is a fucking good drummer (if we need one) and I can play guitar alright for rhythm stuff but not soloing or any lead parts.

I also go to a school for audio engineering so i have access to protools and recording studios almost everyday with very very good mics and equipment. I would be keen to do this but fuck it will take some mass organisation.

As for the sound of I agree with Savage and think a streetlight sound would be cool but that might be too unrealistic. I would like a sound like ska-p and also maybe some electronic sounds like in BTMI. But i'm open to whatever.

Also savage I added you on msn but since i live in new zealand you'll most likly be sleeping when i'm awake and vice versa haha.

Alright, we would probably have you on trombone, since we want everyone to be where they are strongest. It's great if your brother is interested, and maybe we'll see what happens at the end of the week as to whether we'll use people outside the site, and for what.

Audio engineering student eh? Can't really ask for much more than that. I think we've found ourselves a mixer if you're up for it. I'll do all I can in the way of organization, even to the point of sending out tabs/sheet music (whichever each person would prefer) to people and giving them an approximate date to have it sent to you by (I don't want to be a jerk or a slave driver, this should be fun). I don't know specifically how much organization the mixing would take, but I suppose you would, and I would be willing to help with anything I could in that department (if that's anything at all).

Ska-p? BTMI? Pardon my lack of knowledge here, but I don't know that I've heard of either of those. What can I get my hands on to get better acquainted? Everyone keep the suggestions coming.

Ok, I accepted your add, and don't worry about the time difference. I work nights, so I am normally on about 4am EST (10:00am CET), I don't know what this translates into for you, but I would assume our waking hours overlap at least a bit. Also, I don't really hold specific hours, I work 5-6 days a week 6:30pm-3:30am EST (12:30am-9:30am CET), other than that, I could be on at any time, sometimes I only sleep 2 hours, sometimes not at all, so I should be able to use MSN effectively with just about anyone.

Hey, good to see you on board idon'tknow

BTMI stands for Bomb the Music Industry! They have a myspace at www.myspace.com/bombthemusicindustry so you can listen to them there but they also have links on their myspace to where you can download full albums for free. I've heard of Ska-P before but not any of their music.

Instrument wise, I can play trumpet but my range is only about an A3. I can also play the Irish tin whistle, the kazoo and my sister has a toy melodica that I can use

As for recording...I have a Yamaha silent brass microphone but I'm not sure if I would be able to use that to record. It has an earphones output and an AUX input...eh?? I also have some crappy computer microphone, not sure what kind of sound I'd be able to get with that but I suppose it's worth a try.

I use MSN too, if anyone wants it, let me know. I don't use my elgixy account.

It seems there are people that think we are just playing a cover of a song, and people that think we are composing one of our own...I'm up for either, but we should figure this out soon. If we are going the cover route, maybe riding the 4th wave would be a good one to do. We could even open the middle section up and give each member a featured solo, so we did something different that wasn't just emulating a song note for note. This also eliminates the easily overcomplicated task of finding a vocalist.

I can't say I'm a fan of the electronic sounds, but I'm sure if we are writing our own song we could make it fit. I do like the party style horns in ska-p though. I think it goes well with the idea of having different people in different places coming together to make a song.

Oh i just remembered that i wrote a streetlight typed song a while ago. It's ridiculously like them with all the typical streetlight parts. I wrote the hornlines for trombone sax and trumpet as well as the guitaring lyrics and vocal lines. Maybe i'll record it roughly and see what people think and you can contribute ideas etc. I think we should write our own song rather than doing covers though...

Sounds good to me, the more complicated the better too (although people have to be able to learn it in a short amount of time). Streetlight sounding is by far my favorite, so I'm right in on that one. Where do you have this song idea? Paper? Finale? Memory? I'm really interested to hear it as soon as I can.

Savage, I knew the idea was to compose an original, I just suggested doing a quick cover to see how the concept runs. I'm totally for writing our own parts and idon'tknow's song sounds really good too.

Coincidentally, I also thought of Riding the 4th Wave, I just forgot to include it in my last post. That would work well because we could get a loop of the other instruments going and then put lots of horn solos in, depending on how many horns we have. And you know...we already have a tin whistle player I actually performed Riding the 4th Wave a few months ago as some of you may know, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind.

On the subject of vocals though, I think it would be great to have some group vocals, that would sound cool with the different accents and stuff.

And my brother says that I should be able to record with my silent brass mic. Yay.

Ah, I see, sorry Faulk, I had taken that the wrong way and for some reason thought other people had made the same mistake you "made". Ok, so if we're settled on an original (including me now) this can start a lot quicker. I really do like the idea of Riding the 4th Wave, so everyone start practising that line, and maybe a solo or two, and we'll see how quickly we can pull that together. That will be huge in figuring out how long this will take and working out little bugs we might have before we try a full original. Good suggestion (now that I understand it) Faulk.

I had not even considered all the accents...wow. That's a really interesting thing we have there, and you're right, we definitely have to put that to use.

Ok, good, now I've been away for about a week, and I think it's time to say we have our people from the site, and now just ask friends if we need extras. I think the easiest thing to do would be to post the instrument/position that we could play here, just a short post listing the instruments you have access to and think you are good enough to actually record on.

For me, Alto or Tenor Saxophone (if only I had a Bari).
