Hey fellas and fellaettes. I'm doing my final year of high school this year and for my exam I need 15 minutes worth of songs. I wanna include a ska piece in my repertoire, but it's a requirement of the moderator that I supply music for each piece that I play. So, does anyone have accurate trumpet sheet music for any ska songs? This would be very appeciated. -Faulk

Ah, good ol' reliable Savage You know, when I asked the question, I hadn't really given much thought to any specific song. Do you have a list of available bands? That would certainly narrow it down. Right now my biggest weakness is my stamina, so I'm looking for something that's not too high but at the same time I can't choose a song that has huge gaps in it, e.g. a song that only has horns in the chorus (is what I'm not looking for). So I think for now I'll have to have a critical listen to my ska library and get back to you on naming a particular song. Cheers for the response. |

I have a few (I had more, but my laptop died and I'm still repopulating), but honestly, it won't take long to transcribe any song you want (maybe a day or two once I get around to it, if you need it faster than that I can do it in a few hours depending on the song, some songs will only take about 10min) so you might as well just think about the best one for your situation. Very few songs (if any) that I've heard have absolutely continuous horn lines, but if you're going to find it anywhere, I would say it would be a Streetlight or FIF song, unless you want to do something like One Step Beyond by Madness, something by TSPO, or Riding the 4th Wave. You could probably abridge a song or write your own arrangement so that it cuts out the non-horn parts, or better yet, or better yet, you play the singing melody in between the horn lines. I know there are instrumental versions of Zoot Suit Riot-Cherry Poppin' Daddies (even thought it's more swing, it has been done). One Step Beyond is a sax solo, but actually is in pretty good range for trumpet as long as you can hit 3 different octaves (preferably be able to play 3 D's, but 3 of any note will do really). I'll let you look through your library and pick out the best song, those are just a few suggestions based on what you said. When do you need this? |

My final exam will be sometime in October or November so it's definitely not urgent but I'd like to start practicing my repertoire now so that it's really shiny by the time I have to play it. So let's see now... If you could do Blank Stare by The Planet Smashers, I think that would be a good one. So...the lead part (trombone?) is what I'd be looking at, but I'd still play the sax solo(s?). If you've got it, perhaps We Will Fall Together by Streetlight would be a possibility, there are some long rests in that but I don't think they'd be a problem. It's the high parts that would put me off, but then I can always just lower them. Also, what format are we dealing with? Many thanks, -Faulk. |

October or November?!! Wow! Here (in Canada) (most of) our high schools go from September-June, so we have final exams in June. I've never actually heard Blank Stare (actually my Planet Smashers library consists of maybe 3 songs, which is very sad, I should make it bigger), so I will download that and get started. I've actually already started We Will Fall Together, I have the main melody and I've just started on all the harmonies and counter melodies (so I have everything you need already). The problem with that is it doesn't always rely on the main melody for its awesomeness. It's hard to hear without listening to separate parts, but a lot of the hype and melodic sound comes from the harmonies, counter melodies and layered parts. I'll make a version for trumpet and see how it sounds though, it'll probably still be pretty good, but a little weird, like that part at the beginning where 4 instruments repeat basically the same line, when you play it by yourself it'll just be you repeating it, but we'll see. I think the highest note in that song is an E on trumpet, but there are tons of ways around it. I would say Finale is the best if you can get it, that's where my files have been written anyway. No problem, Savage |
