For song writing I suggest "Logic" its about $500 I think ,but it works great.......its what the big guys use....... and it uses MIDI.......I don't really remember what it stands for ... I hink its= musical instrumental device (and something else)... they have special keyboards for that kind of programs and they are pretty cheap too....they are about $200-$350.....it might sound like a lot rite now but it helps a lot in the long run.....that what I got to say...cheers

Logic is only good if you have a Mac lol, but that is pretty much just GarageBand (another mac program) on steroids. You can't actually put things into sheet music if that's what you're looking for.

Any of the Finale programs are good for actually writing sheet music. I use Finale PrintMusic '08 and I love it.
Sibelius is another choice for writing sheet music.

But yeah FL Studio is another thing that's like GarageBand that you can just put in loops or sound files to make a simple electronic song or record your own stuff, but recording's hard if you don't have the best sense of time.

Yes you can with logic. It put's it into sheet music for you in the "score" editor. You can also write your songs in this window as well apposed to the "piano roll" way of inputing "notes"

But yeah you have to have a mac for logic to work unless you get an earlier version but DO NOT do that. Get Logic 8 if you do have a mac. Then get a MIDI controller such as an M-Audio keyboard. You could teach yourself how to use it to write songs but you may get frustrated as to why things may not be working. I have written a shit load of songs using MIDI and it takes some time to get the hang of it but once you do you should be fine....maybe.

But if you don't have a mac then get one
