I play a 1s/7 Calicchio trumpet. With a Yamaha 11B4 mouthpiece which is similar to a bach 7D. |

I play a Bach Strad Model 43 with a (Bach) 10.5C piece. (So does this make me the only one so far without a big mouthpiece...?) For marching practice and football game nights, I use my ol' Conn 20B with a Bach 10C. |

| I play a yamaha 11B4, thats like a Bach 7D. Do you consider that a big piece? I have wanted to try the yamaha 8C4 (bach 10.5C) for some time now. | ||

Nah, I guess not, it just seems like most people are on 3Cs or 1.5Cs. I used to play a 5C for quite some time, but one day I decided to try the 10.5C (which came with my first old beat up trumpet used), and found that it was just as comfortable with the same 'ease' of playing, but also allowed for easier higher-register playing. It took a little while to get fully used to it, but now I like it a lot, since it stil provides a good tone as well. I have to say though, with this mouthpiece, lately I haven't been as consistent (meaning my higher notes seem to have a weak tone), but I think this might be due to my recent constant switching off of 2 very different trumpets. |

My tone and flexibility has sky-rocketed at the expense of range. My range at best is a B above the staff. I guess I just need to work my way back up. |

FunkyMiles wrote:My tone and flexibility has sky-rocketed at the expense of range. Thats the thing with swapping mouthpiece. You will get some gains in one area, but lose some in others. The choice you have to make is what area you want to attack in the practise room. Most people are happy to get a better tone with a new mouthpiece at the expense of range. Why though? I think tone is easier to work on than range. Thats kinda why I like middle size mouthpieces. (not big like a 1 1/2C or 3C but not as small as the 10 1/2C) I play a 7D. |

| My Range took awhile to get back up there when i switched over. Everything else skyrocketed, just like you said, right when i started out. Once you get the hang of it, it is the best mouthpiece you will ever have | ||

| i have a king, have no idea what type/model, got it used, i also use a 7C mouthpiece, for some reason there is extremely good playing quality with this trumpet, even though it is really old(so old that i almost never have to oil the valves). does age actually make a difference in tone? a friend of mine has a new silver yamaha, and the tone on that trumpet really seems to suck, it is quite empty. we both tried it, and it just doesnt seem to be that great. | ||

Just time to upgrade. Im in my final year of uni and parents offered to help pay for part of it for my 21st brithday. My Calicchio was a second hand horn and this is my first new pro horn. I played everything in the shop for 2 days before deciding on the yamaha. Then took an extra day to pick between the three different 8310Z they had. (1 lacquer and 2 silver) I really love the way this horn plays, quite different to the Calicchio as it slots better and has a wider range of sounds from bright to dark (with the right mouthpiece) I keep the Calicchio, and will use it as back-up horn or in places I fear might damaged my yamaha (like marching band or very cramped band stands) |
