Basically, I felt like adding a new topic so go.

I personally like growling because its sexy. I also love playing the whole range of the my tenor, especially the lower end. Thuck tonguing is mad fun but I need practice on that one.

whats thuck tounging?

and to growl u do use the back of your throat? well i do and i think it sounds ace, expecially when i play the lowest B ive got. it scares my dog, so its gotta be avoided!

what other things can you do on the sax, especially with altering the tone

its nothing amazing, but i can go up nearly an octave higher without using the octive key on my alto. hurts tho

Thuck Tonguing is when you finger a low note on the sax. make a suction kind of thing with your tongue to your reed then release and blow slightly to make a nice low thuck kind of sound. It's short and quick and at the same time very cool. check out http://www.petethomas.co.uk/saxophone-effects.html for all sorts of cool effect and sound clips.

It's hard to make it sound not-ugly.

Growling is hot, it just needs practice because everything seems harder while your growling, namely articulations. I generally only play around with growling because I currently have no place for it in my playing but I'm in a Jazz band and also a ska band now so I'm sure I can find a place and time that my growling abilities can shine or at the very least sound sexy.

I really want to master it because it seems like a totally kickass technique. One of those things you throw in a solo and the crowd goes nuts.

I'd have to look into that. I don't hear much growling in ska. I know that Neil Johnson, from the Planet Smashers, uses it in a song on unstoppable. As a side note, unstoppable is an amazing album with kick ass sax techniques all over. He uses growling, altissimo, and other crazy stuff. I love the Tenor Sax solo in bad mood. For good ska sax definately check out the unstoppable album. He plays Tenor and Bari

Altissimo refers to a range above the notes possibly by using the keys. Most horns' keys go up to F/F# so with altissimo you get higher than that. It can basically add another octave to your playing and its crazy. I personally cannot do it yet but I hope to. It's all in overtones so it require lots of practising with long tones and overtones. You hear it alot in craqzy fast jazz, its the really really high almost squeeling sound that is super hot.

The only problem with the sax is that its harder to dance with a big metal thing strapped to your neck, i see why the suburban legands wouldnt have saxes, you cant throw them too far.

You can defiantely dance like mad at with a sax it is just extremely difficult. If you look at hardcore jazz musicians, they are all over the place the craziest guy I saw was laying on the group and still puching out mad altissimo notes. So in conlusion, dancing is highly possible it just takes more skill coordination and a touch of creativity.

You probably could but I know I would never risk it. Guitars are relatively solid and relatively cheap intruments. With a saxophone, I wouldn't want to spin a couple thousand dollars around especially since the chance of something breaking would be very high. If you want to test it out and pay the repair costs if anything goes wrong then I say go for it. tell me how it goes. I personally think it's stupid but I am also apprehensive about leaving my sax at school. My sax and moutpiece will be going on the house insurance policy. Your call.

I do something like that. I have one of those string strap things with just a like rope type thing. so i can spin it in circles in front of me. its pretty tight when me and my trumpet player do it together
