I'll go with Drew with this. I use a Schilke 6a4a for all my high and loud stuff. Keep in mind that you have to practice on a bigger piece too. I practice on a 1D mouthpiece, which I have affectionately named "Toilet Bowl". Though I also know of people who practice on a 14a4a which has the same diameter as a Bach 3c. I do this as well when I'm practicing tone and I use it during concert season.

Has anyone out there played on a Holton MF3? (Which stands for Maynard Ferguson.) My friend got one with his new trumpet, and has been screaming Super Gs without a sweat. He said it took weeks to get used to though. He let me try it out, and I almost instantly hit the highest notes I've ever hit (I played chromatically and got up to a Super F I believe with little difficulty.) The funny thing was, I could barely play a C in the staff. Pretty exhilarating though.

A "cheater" mouthpiece will not increase range. It will only make what you already have a bit easier. Work on your chops and air to increase you range.

pretty much any mouthpiece with a shallow cup will make any lead work much easier, i have a friend in drum corps that uses a Bach 3F for all his lead stuff and works awesome for him. and dubs99, the schilke 6a4a is the one designed for Bill Chase right?

play that 3F or any other cheater mouthpiece in an orchestra and you'll get very bad looks and have a hard time blending. I don't think i'd call the 3F a cheater piece but it's more of a piccolo trumpet mouthpiece, i think. Usually cheater pieces are very small mouthpieces with shallow cups. The 3F has a very shallow cup but it's rim diameter is very wide.

I recently picked up a "Yamaha Japan 6A4a" mouthpiece (which I'm assuming is equal to the Schlike 6a4a? -- This one is really shallow too) just for kicks/experimenting with, but I hardly enjoy it due to such a bright tone it creates. For high notes though, it's pretty cool. However, the MF3 I tried seemed easier to hit even higher notes with, and the tone is not that bright either. It must have to do with the almost completely conical (like a party hat) shape of it's cup, rather than things like shallowness compared to others.

I wish I could get my hands on one, but I think they're pretty hard to find. But Asian Man is right, none of these peices would be good for ochestra/symphony/concert playing.
