Hahaha, you have pretty much the exact problem I have. We have a trumpet, sax, bass, and maybe drums, but we desperately need a guitarist and tromobone.

Hell if you were anywhere near I live, I'd say let's hook up and start a band.

if you can't get a trumpet

get an alto sax, get a metal mouthpiece and you'll sound really bright.
and if you need a bone, use tenor.

or put ads up for a trump and a bone

I actually joined a ska band a couple months ago, but only after a few weeks, we had to go on a standstill for a while since our guitarist joined the swim team at school, and practice is 5 days a week until summer pretty much. We have a trumpet (me), a tenor sax/clarinet, drums, guitar, vocals/tuba/bagpipes (yep.. it's awexome - he's good on the pipes; the instrument is in a terrible key though (B I think), so we don't use it that often), keyboard/piano, and bass although I think he dropped out cuz he went emo or something... but anyways hopefully we'll start up again during summer.

But we managed to make a pretty good start of a song within the 2 weeks we had. This is basicially how we did it:
Our guitarist played around with some riffs (consisting of upbeats of course if you want ska), and then told us horn players (tenor and trumpet) what key he was playing in. He had to do some adjusting/key changes of his riff to make it an easier key for us horn players.

Then we figured out what notes we needed to play -- my friend (the tenor) knows a lot about chords and progressions and whatnot, so he gave me a bunch of notes or different chords we can try playing.

And from there, it was like magic. After only about 5 or 10 mins, I came up with a pretty catchy horn melody. It was very basic at first, but I kept adding for stuff to it as we progressed.

Then from there, he added the horn harmonies -- most of ours were just thirds that the tenor and I switched around with, but it sounded pretty good. We eventually made some pretty complex harmonies/melodies/counter-melodies that sounded awexome.

Then we just worked on that and everything kind of flowed. After the horn lines/main melody, there's a drum break, and then the guitar switches to a different riff, and we just repeat the process.

Just remember to have fun!

someone just plays something, then the rest of the band follows in like a jam session... if we like it, we discuss how to make it better and write lines for whoever isn't there (ex. bass, rythem guitar, etc.)...yes, we're that good, haha... i'll post a link to our stuff once we get stuff recorded
