I really like Mark Bedford from Madness, Tim Burton form The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Jimmy The Robot from the Aquabats. i know that they're not the best but I really like how they play.

I'm sure he's good but there's one small problem, you can't hear him! Well atleast in the Keasby Nights stuff there is only like 2 songs where you can hear him because he has a solo and then in another song for 2 seconds untill the trumpet starts playing the same thing and overpowers him. On that CD there is practically no point in having a sax because they treat it like shit giving it the same shit as everyone else and then it gets lost never to be heard unless you are delibrately listening to it, and that is if you try really hard. If they've changed, suggest me a song but I currently hate the fact that you cannot hear the sax and that is another reason that I really don't like Catch 22 much.

I like Lee Thompson of Madness. Perhaps not the best but he seems to be at the core of every song.

In my opinion I think he is an excellent player. If you listen to one step beyond he does alot of really good stuff. Infact the whole song is his solo. For a player to do that and keep it interesting is quite the achievement. He also growls like a fiend and I think that is definately amazing. I love growling. He is definately one of the top players without a doubt.

Another player that just came to mind is Freddie Reiter or The Toasters and New York Ska Jazz Ensmeble. I am most familiar with his work in NYSJE and I think he is amazing. I believe he is a professional level sax player and teachers and everything. He is also good at growling and just has a sweet sound.

Kevin, after I wrote that post I started listening to some Madness and yeah, he does growl a lot. I'm not a sax player but I'm under the impression that growling's the sax equivalent of flutter tongueing??

After refreshing my Madness memory, I think that he probably deserves more credit that I initially gave him. I needa get more madness...

growling is a vocalization into the sax. Simular to flutter tonguing I guess but you actually sing and to get an good growl it takes alot of control over your saxes tone and your vocal tone. It's my favorite technique. So yeah, I love madness.

I really like Jim Conti from Streetlight. Especially in Keasbey Nights he does a really terrific job at adding some incredible sax solos during Kristina and Riding the Fourth Wave.

But I'm a trumpet player, what do I know?

I'd have to say my favorite Ska Sax player would be THe Tenor Sax Player from The Planet Smashers, he just knows how to lay it down and make it sound really beautiful.

surprisingly, growling is awesome on sax as well as trumpet. think sing, sing, sing. the trumpets come up all raspy...it's done byvibrating your vocal chords while playing, on trumpet. not sure if it's the same as sax....you can flutter on sax too...it's a lot harder for them then trumpet players.
