ya, I wasn't sure you could actually growl on trumpet without messing with your notes (playing a G instead of a C) the way trumpets growl is with flutter tonguing, but i someone has found a way, that's awesome (I'm pretty sure sing sing sing is flutter tongue though. You're right, you can flutter tongue on sax, but it is 10 times more difficult. A good growl would be the equivalence of multiphonics on trumpet when a trumpet player can play two notes at once, that's when a sax player has a growl he's ready to show to the world.

Well you can get a growl out of flutter tonguing (which is basically just rolling your tongue), but I find it's better to hum while you're playing. Start off learning how to hum while you whistle, start whistling, and then try to hum without breaking your whistle sound (it might help to do it really loud until you get the hang of it). Once you can do that, try it with your mouthpiece, then your neck, and finally the whole sax. Some people stop there, and that's fine, but if you take it further you can change your growl. Instead of just humming a random note and playing whatever, try to hum certain intervals above the note you're playing, I've found a major third above whatever note you're playing gives you a nice growl, but you can experiment with different intervals, maybe a perfect fifth. It really is a tricky thing to do, so don't worry about getting it right away, it should take maybe 2-8 days to learn to hum and whistle if you don't know how, another 2-4 days to learn with the mouthpiece, and once you can do it comfortably with the mouthpiece, it shouldn't be long until you can do it with the whole sax. It may take another few weeks to perfect the growl at that point, and depending on your ear training, it could take years to perfect your growl using different intervals. The best way to learn that would be to play an E, remember that tone, hum it, while playing a C, and go up and down the scale, trying to keep from singing the same note as you're playing. It really is a hard thing to do for a lot of people, but if you can perfect it, you will have the perfect growl.
