I haven't really heard any French speaking ska bands, but I do agree that we need more Spanish ska. I want stuff like Panteon Rococo, La Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos Del Quinto Patio, Inspector. I'll try and maybe tab out some of that stuff.

Hey there. I listen to alot of French music. These are my favourite French ska and reggae bands. If I don't give the website just google them, most will have websites.

Yelo Molo www.yelomolo.com
Maximum Kouette (SOOOO GOOD!) www.maximumkouette.com
Fouta
Lo and the Magnetics (formerly the Kingpins, and they're Anglophone, but do have some great French songs.) www.loandthemagnetics.com
Les Kargol's
Spook & the Guay www.spookandtheguay.com
Big Mama
100 Grs de Tetes
Percubaba
Radical el Salam
Juska
Marcel et son Orchestre (I was lucky enough to see those guys live in Montreal, GREAT show) www.marceletsonorchestre.com

That should be a good start!

i'm goin to be in quebec for a day or 2 this summer...
i always hated my french class cause my teacher's a douche...
but if they have ska up there, it'd be cool if someone could tell me where so my group could have the possibility of catchin a show

Where in Qubec are you heading? If your in Montral you could probably find one. Ska is alive in Montral still. That's where the PLanet Smashers are from and the base of Stomp Records. Qubec is an awesome place. I was in Montal for 6 weeks two summers ago and it was amazing.

i think quebec city...
and yeah... i'll only be there for a day...
and i've gotta know bout a show there so i can get my group interested in it, otherwise i couldn't go... which kinda sucks...
and if the music's in french, is it like the type an average american with minor knowledge of the language can understand?

Yo, RCT. If you have minor knowledge of French, then you might get bits and pieces of what's being sung and spoken, but you will have a very difficult (read: nearly impossible) time of understanding the French-Canadian accent if you have never been exposed to it before. French-Canadian slang and the French-Canadian accent are a completely different dialect than European French, which I assume is what you're more familiar with. Fluent European French speakers can often hardly understand at least lower-class or urban Quebecers.

There aren't as many English speakers in Quebec as there are in Montral, but you should be able to speak English most places. However, I warn that people will definitely look at you in disgust.

Also, many Quebecers (moreso in Quebec city than Montreal) will start speaking English to you as soon as they realize you're not a Francophone, even if you speak to them in French. They can be kinda snooty, but don't take it personally.

I absolutely love Quebecois french. It's pretty awesome but hard to understand. I remember talking to people and they would say sentences that I knew everyword in and understood completely but when it came out of there mouths I could say nothing but 'pardon?' It wasn't untill the almost the end of my six weeks in Montreal that I could actually speak french without people not understanding me or asking me to speak english and such. So yeah, don't expect to understand anything. It's awesome though.
