Ive been playing for 5 years, and about a year ago I got braces *Sighs*. Im due to have them off in a couple of weeks, does this mean that when I get them off I will have difficulty in playing for a while or will I be able to play how I used to straight away? Cheers :L

It won't take too long to to get used to. I had the same problem years ago, it wasnt too long before I could play like before. http://horntabs.net/images/smilies/trumpet.gif

I just got my braces off a month ago, it took me about a week or two to get used to it, but my range went from a a3 to an e4 o_O

I went through the whole braces/trumpet situation a couple of years ago.. It's definitely a lot easier to get used to playing without them rather than with them! I think when I got mine off and back used to playing, it was the best I had ever played (at the time) -- because you theoretically improve over time (if you practice well and everything of course), and after 2 or so years (with braces), you'll "improve" (although it probably didn't sound like it), and then getting them off will unleash all of that improvement. Hope that made sense.

| I went through the braces thing when I was in high school. I was crafty and found that the dentist had this stuff called 'wax', to put over the braces to stop them rubbing on your lips. It was pretty much impossible for me to play with the braces I had before doing this. What I did was pack in this dentist wax over the braces to make a smooth surface on my teeth. Although I had limited range up to g3 I think 1 above the staff. I was able to keep playing reasonably well. After I got them off within a couple of months I was playing lead trumpet and doing all kinds of crazy solos. You do improve. Even if people think your crap for a couple of years ! | ||

| I tried the wax and also these plastic tube-like things that fit over your braces, but I didn't like anything on mine. My lips usually got chopped up on the inside pretty bad, but I was able to play better without anything on the braces. But everybody's different. | ||

| I got my brqces on a month after I started playing :(. That screwed me up.... then when I got them off, my tone was all over the place so, I kept my retainer in to simulate my braces but after a while, I could play just as well as I could ever. | ||
