I just re-read my post and it seems a little confusing, so here's the edit to that last sentence:

*as in people who actually think for themselves and not really care about the thoughts of others (particularly the "cool/in" people), and do things based on their own decisions, and not the decisions of the people at MTV.

Exactly all my friends are the ones who wear there pants actually near their waiste instead of at the knees as the "cool" people do. I guess soon enough anything on t.v will become the new thing. But the will always be the few who stay true. The ones who will succeed

Right on.

It seems to me that the ones who go through like 30 girl/boyfriends in school will only end up sad and lonely or in a strained relationship as an adult, and the ones who had like none or a couple in school will be much more happier and successful in relationships/marriages as adults.

Maybe it's a little extreme, but that's my theory.

and to further prove your point...
The only reason that they will end up in a bad marriage is because they go for the girls who give it all up and think nothing of it...they get pregnant then you're now bonded with a women you just wanted to bone. Guys who go for the classier girls end up in better relationships. And then, as you shall find out, the girls that you wait for, wind up being the best you'll ever find.

I've slowly been discovering a lot of metal groups that are not that well known. But I only like specific ones that have vocals in normal voices, such as DragonForce. I'll never get used to the deep growl/death metal/screaming sound. It's pretty annoying, IMO. But a lot of metal groups have awexome melodies and riffs.

I end up listening to a fair amount of metal when I am in my friends car [I've gotten him listening to alot of ska but there is still a good amount of metal] but I know exactly what you mean. The gowling and stuff is like whatever but then there are these bands that have insane vocals and such and it's pretty sweet. They go all out with intense vocal harmonies and they all seem to have really big voices with giant vibratos. I quite like it. I think doing the vocals in that type of metal band would be loads of fun because you can use the biggest voice you have and all the lyrics generally revolve around heroic plots and such. I've also noticed the use of strings alot in metal. The only thing with metal is that some of it is just so out there and the people playing it are the sketchiest people on the planet.

Yeah, you said it Kevin. A lot of it is actually really "musical." There's a group called Symphony X that even uses symphonic/classical style guitar riffs and they're amazing. Yep, strings and pianos are also awexome in metal; Dream Theater uses strings in a few songs and a lot of piano. And you also mentioned the lyrics that revolve around heroic and epic plots and stuff -- I think that's awexome; it's definitely true for DragonForce.

And by insane vocals, I think Kevin's talking about how they always belt them out (not screamo or death metal though -- to me, that's just noise), and how you can just tell by their singing that they have a passion for what they're doing.

Yeah that's what I was getting at with the reference to insane vocals. I used the word insane because it is just so good. When you listen to most vocalists in bands, they are okay but I would never describe their vocal talents as insane. But honestly, some of thee metal singers are just awesome. They know how to belt those notes out with power and conviction something that you just don't see that often. I'm not an amazing vocalist myself but I try and I appreciate really good vocals [my best friend wants to become an opera singer] so when I hear these big powerfull vocals with harmonies and giant vobratos I just can't help myself from loving it. I think Ska in general needs better vocalists because most of them are not that amazing. My favorite Ska vocalist is the lead singer from Save Ferris because she can belt and she just has really good control over her voice. So talking about vocals, ska doesn't kick ass [some bands do but most do not] I am actually going to download some metal right now. [SeverFire, do you have any more recomendations?]

For some more normal-voice-metal (some heavy, some lighter), I'd recommend:

Adema, DragonForce, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment (no vocals actually, just the music), Manowar, Megadeth, Metallica, Nightwish (pretty awesome and unique), Opeth, Stratovarius, and Symhony X.

I also have some "death metal" artists, but I usually just listen to the cool intro or whatever, then change it when the singing comes in (lol). I love the first minute and 10 seconds of "The Light that Blinds" by Shadows Fall for example, and also the beginning of "Mask of Sanity" by Children of Bodom.

Also, just a little tidbit -- not all ska has horns in it, although most do. What makes ska ska is its upbeats. Everything is based on those upbeats. An example is earlier stuff by 311. But otherwise, but the horns are definitely a good thing.

Oh, I was gonna mention that if you have iTunes, try searching for some the artists I mentioned above in the iTunes Music Store, and then check out what some of the artists under "Listeners also bought" are -- you can discover a lot more similar artists this way.
