i was looking on a site to learn how to use a plunger with a trombone, and it said that you get the best most raunchiest sound when you growl, and it was made popular by tricky sam from duke ellington.

my question is how to growl your trombone

thanks a million

well as far as i know. growling happens either when ur not supporting your air and it sounds very dirty or when ur putting MASSIVE amounts of air thru the bone. either is pretty tough to do on purpose...and if ur thinking of growling (or purring) like trumpets do alot...jus rull ur tongue while playing...but i've never had a spot in a song where it sounded good like that.

Growling on a saxophone requires vocalization into the intrument but I know when I tried that on the trombone, it really didn't make that much of a difference to the sound. It didn't work on the tuba either when I tried playing it like a didgeridoo. The rolling of the 'R' is called flutter tonguing and that is not what you want either. So yeah, I am really no help.

No that's a flutter tongue. flutter tonguing and growling sound different and are done differently. Growling is like you're trying to hack up a loogie while flutter tonguing is rolling your "r's".

Polyphonics are a bitch and wont help Growling. An easy way to growl is to hum in the back of your throat very loudly. Also, puffing your cheeks helps a small bit to get started.
