Just a thing that I've noticed....
vocalists rarely come in right on the first beat, they usually come in on the upbeat or take three pickup notes. Try to do the same, it'll take away some of the basicness of your parts and make it sound more natural.

If you're the one writing the songs, write them on a guitar, or a keyboard, and make sure you know your chords, and scales for that matter. Other than that, try to keep the vocals and horns on the offbeat, until the end of the phrase. It should come natural though. Just don't keep the songs in one key, and try not to use complicated time signatures. Usually ska is written in 4/4, but there are some exceptions such as for the first time by westbound train, which is in 6/8, but that adds like a swing feel to it. Then the sax solo thing at the beginning of That'll be the day is in 15/16, but that's only part of the song. Anyway, sorry for getting sidetracked, and I hope this helps some.... One more thing.. when I write something, I ask myself the question, "Can/Would I skank to this?". I think it helps a lot. Once again, I hope that helped, and good luck with your band.
