I'm a guitar/bass player who some time ago bought a digital 12 track recorder. I dabble in keyboards and have recently just bought a sax to add to the mix. Now, I can't play. But some 10 odd years ago i could work out a riff/lick on the guitar and transfer that to the sax, which is all I'm looking to do for recording purposes. I am going to learn how to read music for the sax correctly, but wonder if anyone can advise the intricates of tabbing for the sax. Obviuosly I understand what the letters mean (the note), but what are the 2's, + and other stuff you guys add in. A quick lesson in written tabs will be appreciated.

Simple. The number refers to the octave. For example if I told you to play a D on the bass, you could play it in what, 4? 5? different places. So 1 is the lowest octave and it goes up from there. And the pluses and minuses are just sharps and flats (+ is for sharp and - is for flat). If that didn't help then there should be something about reading tabs in the 'Articles' section.

Cheers Faulk, thanks for clearing that up for me. Don't go away though, there may be more easy (silly) questions to come! |

| Okay I'm prolly gonna make myself sound stupid here, but what does ~ mean in a tab? I've been trying to figure it out. Im thinking it means to hold the note for longer but im not sure... | ||

Its pretty much any tenor sax tab that i have looked at. for example, if you look at frosty the snowman, (its just the first thing that i clicked on) it has several of them in it. thanks for helping. |

| Well from looking at the Frosty the Snowman tab, it looks like they're just used to show that the note is a bit longer. I don't think I've seen them in any trumpet tabs so I'm just guessing. Does anyone else know? | ||
