Hey
I play sax, and trombone
Anyway my band is recording on saturday and im playing both...not a problem.

Im just wondering where you would place the mic..so as to pick up all the notes but limit the clicky noises
Any info would rock

Cheers

The problem with a sax is that the sound is not directional like that of a brass instrument but generally a mic is placed by the bell of the sax just don't shove it in. Just play around with it I guess. good luck with it all.

by clicky, do you mean peaking or key clicks? if its peaking, turn down the mic, and key clicks shouldnt be a problem. the best things to use are uni directional intrument mics (or band uses shure sm-57 mics) and a mic stand that is aimed downward into the bell (about 2-5 inches away) good luck (and listen to Soul Regatta at soulregatta.com)

I'm gonna add another question on to this. What is the best way to mix a saxophone. Like what effects to use. I use an alto saxophone, and when mixed with the other horns sometimes it sounds pretty cheesy when we do home recording, what is the best way to make it sound like what I hear when I just play my saxophone?

Thanks,
Roo

Last weekend my band recorded (track by track) and using the Shure SM 57 we got a great sax sound. What i did was i placed the mic at a 90 degree angle to my sax and stood back about a foot. We got a great sound and there was no clicking. Also because i was further back the dynamics were where i wanted them to be. If you put the mic close to your bell you lose most of your mid-range but your low-range is far too loud.

no! the 57 is a performance mic. you will get quality better in exponential levels if you use recording mics...regardless of instruments. the performance mics have a stop, they dont pick up the full attack. recording you could use something like any condenser mic...or go buy something that is more than 60 bucks. of course, as soon as you buy the better mic. you goota make sure yer using the greatest program...and computer...and levels...and oh no, dont forget the cables! and...some of those DJ headphones.. but then....think of your audience...how many of them are going to be able to tell

For sax just record above the bell, for trombone it just depends how loud you play. Either record a few feet away, or behind a music stand.
