How do you guys actually start a band? Do you go down in a basement and just jam out in a certain key? Or do you write music and play. And what does the singer do? I've never known what comes first, the words to a song or the music. Help me out guys |

The first step is getting members. Once I get that sorted out, I'll let you know 'bout the rest. In the mean time, there's other threads around this site that are similar to this. I'll post them in a sec... |

Best way of starting is getting all the members sorted (obviously). after that try playing other bands stuff just to practice and get a feel for playing together as a band. As for whether lyrics or music come first it doesnt really matter too much - Its best to do them at the same time.

| start with covers, until you get used to playing together, and can start improving your style. record and post some of your stuff and make demo cd's so you can get feedback through the internet or locally. then write some great stuff and spread the SKA! | ||

i personally dont think that a band should start with covers...me and my brother are writing music for a possible band....and all we do...is sit around with a couple of guitars in the middle of the night and work out the chord structure and progression...and then i kinda do solo notes to him playing and figure out the horns...and then we pick up the horns the next day and see what works. so far we've only got through two songs...but we dont want to work too fast and get sloppy. just work through things to mak them sound good.

nah i think covers are best way, or complete adaptions of a song. it's easier and you get to see whether you all can play together well |

| Starting and maintaining a band is hard, especially if you don't have the right people. I'm in a band right now and because of the make-up of people we have no real direction, we have no idea what we're doing...it's good if everyone in the group has the same mindset about what you're playing and how you're playing it. Also everyone needs to be flexible and open to compromise, especially if there's a few people who have very strong opinions about what the band should be doing. | ||

| At the moment I am beginning to form a band, we started as a group of some 10 or so local ska fans and became united under the name [Team Skank] in preparation for going to the Extraction Fest 2 with [spunge] headlining. From that group of 10 we are slowly growing into a band, those of us that don't or didn't play an instrument have decided to pick one up and begin to learn. At the moment we are still in the process of forming a whole band but the workings are there and it is moving forward. Now to plug! We have decided on the name [u]Men On Skaffolding[u]. | ||
