Desmond Dekker, may he RIP. Regarded by most as the king of ska. The Skatalites as well. The first real ska band. More modern, you say? Well... The Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Mustard Plug. The Toasters. Fishbone. Basically all of what Mr. Skeevy man said earlier (despite the fact I can't stand a couple of those bands whatsoever, I suppose they fit the bill of what you're looking for.)If I was at my real computer now, I'd actually go through my library and give you a comprehensive list. But I have no music at the moment. Sad, I know. It really isn't tooo difficult to find some dece ska bands out there. Besides, if all else fails, there's always MySpace...

k, now for some ska band that havnt been mentioned yet, you may need to go to purevolume to get some of this stuff, but it's still pretty good stuff, k, so: Voodoo glow skulls, westbound train, five iron frenzy, the forces of evil, babylove and the van dangos, skankin' pickle, long shot hero, operation ivy, crowned king (kinda), ska-p (spanish ska), save ferris. Ya, random ska bands for the win ^.^

Toots and the Maytals! I can't believe no one has mentioned them yet! Though some of Toots's stuff might be considered reggae (he is widely credited with inventing the word reggae or reggay), his early stuff like Broadway Jungle, 54-46 Was My Number (which got more press after Sublime covered it), and Six And Seven Books of Moses are distinctly ska. Ride the first wave!

I just assumed that Rancid are like, metal or hardcore because I see it scribbled on backpacks and jeans in heavy black texta, along with slipknot, manson and ramstein. As for decent music: Five Iron Frenzy The O.C. Supertones The Insyderz 7/10 Split Halfway Out Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution Sounds Like Chicken The Cat Empire (not ska but good) The Roots (also not ska) The Hippos

Like many popular punk bands, their name has been abused, stenciled on bookbags alongside other completely different bands for the sole purpose of creating an "image." It's sad. That aside, they are an excellent punk/ska band. I'd say they're 60% punk, 40% ska. No horns, but it's really good stuff. Most of the bands listed here are great. |

Don't forget the old stuff from some relatively well-known bands like 311, Goldfinger, and No Doubt. Better yet, look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ska_musicians |

| I guess it's all just a matter of opinion. Some people (like me) might not like the more "hardcore" stuff. I'll listen to it, but I don't like it as much. | ||
