I heard from my friend that she had a song, and I was just like... omg... *shakes head* I haven't heard it and I make no plans to either. |

| Ok, I saw your post in the other thread that it's like a ska song, so I listened to a little of it... I just think that the upbeat rhythms just happened to be the rhythm chosen for that pop song. But what do I know. Let's pray she doesn't bring (wannabe) ska into the pop scene. | ||

| The thing is though, the focus on the upbeat and the palm-muted guitar is what makes it ska. Think about it... if you had a song with a regular beat and then some horns, would you call it ska? I couldn't. It doesn't have to have horns to be ska either. | ||

Sorry but I still disagree. It's the speed that does it for me. If it was ska, I think you would be more aware of it. I don't know much about Paris Hilton but I just can't imagine her sticking to ska. But, we'll see... |

yeap, severfire. as selfish as the thought is, i don't want any "wannabe" ska bands and singers. as soon as they come popular, then i won't be alternative, baby. i'll be seen as scene. see what i did? saying that, over here in england p.h. isn't that popular with the kids. nor is her song a musical masterpiece. it's a song to fill the void that is the record charts. no need to worry.. |

We can only hope that that's the only song she releases that relates to ska/reggae/whatever. I won't stand for ska going mainstream. It will most definitely lose it's quality now. We'll just have to rally up a two-tone army to supress the it's growth into the mainstream. For Faulk: I wish that there was a general definition for what genres are. Then again, I hate even labelling music that way. Speed definitely has a statement when determining whether it's ska. But I will remain to believe that it's a certain way the guitar is played that differentiates ska from rock/any other genre. I can understand where you're coming from, though, and I respect your opinion. |

Yeah, I know what you mean, it is hard to draw the line and that song is very nearly closely in fact could be ska. But thats cool. Because this song is kind of in the border area, its hard to classify but I think that music should be what the artist wants and not labelled like you said. However, if Paris Hilton keeps that sound and people call it ska, I will be annoyed. On the other hand, if PH herself calls it ska...well I supposed the borders have just grown wider. And what you were saying about the two-tone army to supress its growth, that sounds really stupid but I agree. Ska will become...weird if it becomes mainstream especially if people start liking it just because its on the radio or because wannabes are singing stupid ska songs. Am I contradicting myself? Did all that make sense? I think so but let me know if it doesn't.

| all i wish is people'd respect ska more, not necessarily listen to it... hell, i got into it because i heard 1 of the 5-6 ska songs they ever play on the radio... which is super rare anyways... | ||

Back to that Paris Hilton song...it's definetly trying to pull a ska/reggae feel. It reminds me of no doubt. Only shittier. Wow. I'm still kind of in awe. |

| Let Paris Hilton do whatever she pleases with whatever music she makes. If she's calling herself reggae, then let her do so. Being an avid listener to ska/reggae, I can tell you that her song is a peice of crap on reggae standards, she took the upbeats, and put put the upbeats on two random guitar chords, and left it at that. Simpilest song in existance. As of what I heard, about 3 people in existance care about Paris in any way whatsoever. Give it a week, then she'll be doing some other thing that noone cares about... | ||

Yea, are you surprised? What's popular right now? She's not even a musician, just a fucking slut money maker. Give it a couple years. She'll be completely forgotten. But notice how many commercials use ska or reggae music. It's unbelievable. |

Oh I know I can't believe how many commercials use the ska/reggae feel in them. You're right though, marty and skankin_toaster, she'll be forgotten. I was simply worried that we may be exposed. I always like it more when the underground scene stays underground. |

I don't really mind if a genre suddenly gets a mainstream appeal, as long as the music stays with its roots. If the music is good, whats the problem? However I understand the underground appeal as well - smaller venues can be more fun then a jam packed stadium. And theres also something cool about listening to bands that no one really knows about. |

well there will be some good bands should ska become mainstream. there are some mainstream bands, and the first and second waves were pretty big in their days. so there'll be good bands, maybe original. along with the factory produced tat bands. and it is paris hilton, i doubt she'll set any trends soon. don't worry! |

| I'd just personally like to say that if ska ever fully reaches mainstream then it would be a good thing. we wud have more and more ska bands appearing due to it being trendy which is surely what we all want, more ska. just cos it goes mainstream doesnt make it bad. all the waves of ska so far have been called waves due to appearing into the mainstream like two-tone with the specials achieving a number one, now u cant say "Ska will suck if it goes mainstream" when the specials and madness (especially madness) were rele mainstream. u alternative kids r just fucking shit. u shudnt like music just to be different or to make u cooler. alternative kids r completely shit but ska boys and girls are the worst of the lot, or at least modern ska boys and girls. as for paris hiltons song it did piss me off cos i hate her but if it gets people listening to ska then more ska bands will arise and therefore more ska music for us all. | ||

| yes, i completly agree with this, i think if ska was mainstream it would be a good thing. I just think that the Paris hilton song is a peice of crap in relation, and of ska goes mainstream, i dont want her to bring it upon society. | ||
