What is the best combination of horns for a third-wave ska band. I want to start one, but I can't get any trumpets but maybe two trombones (including me, of course) and maybe some kind of sax. Not many of my friends want to form a ska band with me, but they don't know what real music is.

| well... it's really up to the style u wanna play, and who would play what... the standard line would be around 1 tenor sax, 1 trumpet, and 1 bone... but i've seen some with 2 trumpets, 1 bone; or just a sax; or thousands of other combos... my band, we have 2 trumpets, 1 tenor, and i'm the boner... | ||

there are thousands of combinations... what we did was we grabbed whoever was willing to play and who we thought were good enough and worked from there we ended up with 1 of each trumpet, bone, and alto sax ^ my band's horn section |

i gotta edit that... we started out with 1 trumpet, and a tenor... then they found me, so then we had 1 of each... but then our trumpet's mom was bein retarded and wouldn't let her be a part of us anymore... or basically have a life outside the house... so then for like 2 weeks, we went all crazy to try to find someone to hold down her spot until she could come back... in that time, we found an alto/soprano saxist, a keyboardist, and our other trumpet... but even tho the other sax and keyboardist kinda dropped from it, we're keepin our other trumpet only as a featured member, since he's too busy with his band right now...

I reckon it doesnt matter how many or what combinations there are. For an idea this is what some bands horn sections consist of. Reel Big Fish - (Currently) 2 trumpets , 1 trombone Less Than Jake - (currently) 1 Trombone , 1 saxophone The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - 2 Saxophones , 1 trombone Catch 22 - 1 trumpet , 1 trombone , 1 saxophone |

with rbf, wasn't it 1 of each, cause i know when they came thru here this year, there was a guitarist/trumpet... makin 2 trumpets and a bone... and streetlight... tenor, bari, trumpet, bone... and i think that the saxes also switch off to alto as well |

I'd say as a minimum you'd want one higher instrument and one lower instrument. Also, for a better sound (in my opinion) you'd want a brass and a saxophone of some sort. Examples include alto sax and a trombone, or a trumpet and a tenor/bari sax. In my band we have an alto and a bone. Works pretty well. |

| I agree with possum. one trumpet, one trombone. Maybe a sax, too. But that one will need a mic, otherwise you won't hear him... | ||

| as far as i know, the common instrument in the equation is a bone... not sayin that you can't go without 1, it's just easier to use one of those to hold down the bass brass notes | ||

| Im kind of planning to start a ska band in college and the horn setup i want is almost the same as trombonemalone, trumpet, bone, and tenor, but i think id pick bari over alto but more often than not if someone can play bari, they can play alto. | ||

Thanks for the advice guys. I got a group together; hopefully we'll start practicing soon. To start we only have two trombones, but we can always add to that! Don't stop skankin'!

You want a crazy horn section? My old band had 8 horns. After a while, 16 people got ridiculous, so the whole roster dropped dramatically (myself included) In general, I can't add much else, Whatever you can get, make it work. Bands work with one trumpet, or a bari sax and a trombone. It's all in how you make use of the horn player's skills. |

a local band used to have a a sax, a trumpet, and a bone, now they've dropped to a tenor sax... they weren't very good anyways, punk with horns... and i think they've disbanded, last i heard... but another band i know that is still out there kickin ass is this one with 2 trumpets and a trombone... they play some ska covers of green day and chicago, with alotta originals |

| Lately I've been thinking about just having a sax section as the horn section in a ska band. You know, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bari. I'm not sure how good that would sound though, but it would be different. | ||
