Hi. I bought a trumpet a few months ago with the intention of learning to play Ska. Anyone my practice has been severely limited since there is always people home and I don't want to annoy them with my loud/and poor trumpet playing. I've seen mutes and silencers online but I really don't know anything about them or even the differences. I heared that the peacemaker was a good silencer but I wasn't able to find a place to buy one online except for oversea stores that I wasn't willing to buy it from. The peacemaker got discontinued according to musicians friend, and I couldn't find any on eBay. I am going to college in a week and playing trumpet there without some kind of way to silence it will be impossible. I don't want to spend more than $50 if possible. Can anyone recommend me a good purchase? I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP ON TRUMPET BECAUSE OF THIS! It's such a headache!

There is a silencer called Silent Brass made by Yamaha I believe that I've seen and tried out, and it works very well. You plug in headphones to hear yourself, and you can barely hear yourself without them. The problem with these of course is that it creates more pressure when you're blowing, so it's not like the true form of playing.

The best thing if you don't want to bother others would be to play in a more secluded area, maybe the closet (lol), or garage, behind closed doors.

But good luck, and also, if you are just learning trumpet (to play anything), it is a very good idea to get some private lessons, at least for a while to start off on the right foot.

Yeah. The "get and your car and practice" method is quite good if you know what your goals are each pratice, and private lessons at a music place is quite good too. And if you get good enough to improv you could probably play on the street and make like 20 bucks.

I would suggest either wait until everyone leaves, or stop caring. I quit caring after a while, and everyone else that lived in my dorm hall got used to it. The only people it really bothered were my suitemates, and they barely cared that much. People just have to accept that you're a musician, and you need to practice. If they don't want you practicing, tell them to go suck a goat.

Drew has a good point -- I recently went on vacation with my family to stay in a condo (in Mammoth, SoCal), but wanted/needed to keep up my practicing. The condos were all connected to each other, and ours was surrounded by like 5 others. So I just went into the bedroom and closed the door and played, a little softer than usual at first, but later on, I was like whatever, what is anyone gonna do? So I played regularly, and no one said anything, they probably just got used to it or something.

one way that sucks, but works, is to just stick a sock in it, practice your fingering and blowing.

Get a good practice mute and all your worries will be over. Don't waste your cash on the silent brass. I bought a Wallace Collection practice mute this summer because I'm living in residence at university now. It's veyr quiet and has way less resistance than the silent brass.

When there aren't too many people around I'll practice with a harmon so I can hear myself a little better, and sometimes I just say to hell with it and practice without the mutes.

You could just not give a toss. Or, if your of the more caring side of the human race, you could get a silent brass or practise mute, although mutes still make a lot of noise if you have thin walls. A trick i learnt is to shove a 2 litre bottle in the bell, sounds stupid but best damn makeshift mute i've ever had

Houses that don't encounter tornadoes or hurricanes likely don't have a basement, and that's like half the nation.

First off, let me say welcome to the f*cked up ranks of trumpet players :D. You say "house" so you have a basement. Also, since you want to play ska but probably dont play that high, learn "Superman" by Goldfinger. Its a low playing but still awseome song. Still join school ensebmbeles too. Have fun

I just got the silent brass mute as a present today. I think its the best thing ive ever used. Doesnt distort sound at all, comes with a load of effects, and it works better then the sock ive been using. Its well worth the money, and it is a decent mute to play with as well!

Hey i've got that yamaha silent brass mute thing too. Makes the horn REALLY quiet with very little blowing resistance but the sound quality is SHOCKING! Still, its better than not playing.
