Can anyone give me the names of a couple really awesome bari sax players or songs? I've just started playing the instrument and I need some inspiration and examples of good technique.

Well you got "Everything Went Numb" by Streetlight Manifesto, "Carlita" by Goldfinger, which has a kick ass bari sax solo, All of the Album Losing Streak by Less Than Jake has bari sax in it. Actually anything by Streetlight has good bari sax in it. Also try out some B.O.T.A.R. And Im pretty sure that the bari sax player for Streetlight is Dan Ross.

Check out the "New City Gamblers" from Trois Riviers, Quebec. They used to be called the Gamblers, but changed their name for some reason. www.newcitygamblers.com oh... and their current purevolume song is nothing like the rest of their stuff lol

Fuck Ska bari players, check out guys like Gerry Mulligan. They made the fucking bari sax. I'm drunk by the way.

If you want to check out an amazing bari sax song, check out Charles Mingus - Moanin', an amazing bari intro.

if you go to www.mingusmingusmingus.com, you can hear a clip of "moanin'" and a video clip the "Moanin' Mambo" which is a latin version of the song. both are fantastic and feature Ronnie Cuber. I also Encourage you to go to www.saxontheweb.net and check out their forum. anything sax related is there, or ask and you'll find it.

I agree that you should check out non ska players first and learn classical and jazz pieces before you jump into ska. Unfortunately, I do not know any bari players as I play Tenor but just google search it and you should find some good inspiration. Solo work will give you a much better idea of what the instrument can do. If you want ska, The planet Smashers newest album -unstoppable- has some bari on it. The tenor player doubles on bari and plays some more noticable bari parts that I think are pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. After being completely knocked on my ass by Moanin', I tabbed the intro. Once sander's back that'll be one more bari sax tab for the site.

a good but wierd band that disbanded is Morphine. they are a early 90's "rock" band with a bari, bass, vocals, and drums (yeah anti-guitar, like ben folds) there a bunch of cool songs , but i warn you its very ... well... odd. Weird lyrics.
