Alto isn't played very often. I think you can only use it in some solistic parts in synphonic music or classic and stuff like that. I think you played a tenor in school. It's quite difficult to switch between tenor and alto. I play a Yamaha, too (YSL 648R). You can't get anything better for that money.

what ever u do dont get yamaha! they suck!
get bach or jupiter if u wanna get your moneys worth
but not bach
and if u want a good trombone for wide range and low notes get an open wrap with F/D attachments... if u want to do high jazzy stuff get a Tenor trombone with no attachments...

@ flem:

your post is a little bit controversial, isn't it? first you say "don't get yamaha", then you say "but not bach"

I play Yamaha. I'm very satisfied with that horn.
Bach is also very good, but it's more expensive. Yamaha isn't that far away from Bach in quality. They got a lot better in the recent years

I forgot:

I have read several tests, where yamaha and jupiter trombones were compared. Yamaha won.

And if you want to play Jazz, buy a Jazz bone

dude, i must be so lucky. i bought a trombone that all i knew about was it worked from a pawn shop for $150. it's some french brand (which i have come to believe as the god makers of trombone) made in the 40's ....and...it's so totally awesome. it's just a tenor with nothing fancy, but it's heavy i think. it works great for ska. nice and fat most the times. i dont think i'd buy a new trombone...i really dont like the look of a really shiny trombone. it's just not me, i guess. i dont like the whole silver thing either...so kill me
